about

The Changes
Written on 6th April 1989 the chords spiral round itself like matter being sucked into bent space around a black hole. There was a childrens’ TV series in the mid ‘70’s called The Changes (recently released on DVD by the BFI), involving the rejection and collapse of the modern ‘machine-culture’ inspired by ancient natural forces (and the still trapped spirit of Merlin) trying to bring humanity back in touch with nature. Other than the title the song is not directly related to this, but with the slow awareness that something fundamental is changing in personal perception or outlook; however the machine-smashers of the TV series were affected by ‘The Changes’ and the phrase lingered. There is a 1990 live version as well as the recording on the 2nd album, The Changes was added to the live-list from the beginning. This was rerecorded during the Everything Changes sessions, at SSR and Bryn Elwy

The bonus tracks:
Evolution and change is an important aspect of The Speed Of Sound, from the beginning the plan was for the bonus disc to reflect the way a selection of the songs from the back catalogue on the current live-list were currently being played

lyrics

The Changes

I don't know what I'm thinking anymore
My mind runs in spirals and crashes on the floor
I pick up the pieces and put them away
At the back of the draw where no one can see
But I can feel the changes creeping over me

I don't know where all this is going to
I'm just spinning round wearing out both my shoes
I try to go forwards but my feet walk back
To those places I know where no one can see
I can feel the changes creeping over me

Something is changing its altering me
I don't feel the same I just feel the change in me

I don't know what I'm trying to lose
I collect all my things and watch them for clues
I sit up in the dark and push at the walls
One day they might move but still they can't see
But I can feel the changes creeping over me

I don't know what I'm looking at now
I don't recognise it but feel I should somehow
None of this is mine I don't know where it came from
Why can't they see?
But I can feel the changes creeping over me
