about

This Winterland - is about the Antarctic Treaty preventing exploitation of the natural resources within Antarctica for fifty years - was not finally ratified until 1998, and the song dates from 1989 when the discussions were yet again stalled. The wolves seemed to be gathering. It is also about corporate greed/short-termism and not caring about consequences.

lyrics

This Winterland

The cold cuts through you too in this winterland
Burning eyes devour you few who understand
Covering smothering shrouded in ice
Towers of silence void of life
Out of sight is out of our minds
No sentinel watching
This winterland

Gathering gathering
From far and wide
Chilling cries rise to the skies
Hair stands tall and lips drawn back
As the hunger deep within them turns to greed

Snarling tearing at the entrails
Saddened and pale the keen wind wails
Oil will flow and coal it will burn
While the knell tolls
Slowly beats the muffled drum

Blinding white now tarnished and grey
Snowed under in debris
and laid to waste
Soon sallow and pale this winterland

Drained and plundered
Then cast aside
Oil will flow and coal it will burn
While the knell tolls
Slowly beats the muffled drum
