about

Time Will Tell - Is inspired by a painting of ‘Truth Emerging From The Well’. She is of course naked - as truth should be, but determined on retribution against those who threw her down. She is clutching a birch branch to beat her tormentors and has a crazed menacing expression. It is a very powerful image. I have no idea who painted it and it does not seem to exist on the internet. The Parliamentary 100 Year-Rule about not releasing secrets until after the embarrassment has passed is also in there as subject matter.
The feedback-like sound in the chorus is three notes picked with an awful lot of sustain and tremolo. The break? The song is about the passage of time. GMT may be measured from London, but Scotland owns the rights to New Year; hence the Caledonian tinge.

lyrics

Time Will Tell

Up from the well where she was thrown
Naked and screaming but not even bruised
Given the time the truth will come out

Locked away for one hundred years
Hidden silenced numbered and boxed
Embarrassment softly spirited away
Quietened subdued and quelled for a while

Time will tell - Time will tell
Unerringly climbing the rungs of time
Looking up light is just out of sight
Time will tell - Time will tell
Listen time passes in hours and days
Quietly creeping for one hundred years
In all that time she has never been heard
Patiently waiting as days tick by
Time will tell - Time will tell
Leaving the dank and the stale air behind
She emerges at last up from the well
Time will tell - Time will tell

Up from the well where she was thrown
Naked and screaming but not even bruised
Given the time the truth will come out
Clutching the branch of the birch tree in hand
Clutching the branch of the birch tree in hand
Clutching the branch of the birch tree in hand
Too late
