about

Ghosts of Grytviken is about an abandoned South Atlantic whaling-station; an industrial ghost town. Whale-Catchers were abandoned there when commercial whaling ended and they quietly rust away in front of the tanks used to store the whale oil. Atmosphere and ambiance lead into and out of the song.

lyrics

Ghosts Of Grytviken

The fleet is in today
Lapped and caressed by small harbour waves
In cold clear autumn sunlight
Flaking blistered corroding
Blind glass-less windows gape
Buckled plating grating
Grinding in the change
Beached like a whale
Partly submerged its carcass gone stale
The harpoon gun points skyward
Rusting at their moorings
Enduring
Their final abandonment

There are ghosts here now - only ghosts here now

In the whalers graveyard
And last the seasons tallyboard
Soundly and softly they sleep
Run off grooves are foaming red
Flenching knives cut till the harbour was dead
Deserted
Tranquility reigns here
Run off grooves are foaming red
Flenching knives cut till the harbour was dead
Deserted
In its peaceful calm

There are ghosts here now - only ghosts here now
